Why Was My Pokemon Center Preorder Cancelled?

Pokemon Center runs your card again shortly before a preorder ships. If that check fails, the order is cancelled and cannot be brought back. Here is what it checks and when.

Why was my Pokemon Center preorder cancelled? Almost always because the shop could not get your card to authorise when the order was processed for shipping. Their own Preorder FAQ says it in one sentence: if the system cannot authorise your payment method when preorders are processed, the order is cancelled and cannot be reinstated. That check runs days before the parcel leaves, nobody warns you it is coming, and by the time the cancellation email lands the decision has already been made.

  • Your card is checked twice: a hold when you order, which drops off after 5 to 7 business days, and a second authorisation shortly before shipping.
  • Pokemon Center UK says the second check comes about seven days before shipment. The shared FAQ says 3 to 5 business days. Plan for the earlier one.
  • A cancelled preorder cannot be reinstated, and the same item may not come back up for preorder.
  • Gift cards, Apple Pay and PayPal cannot be used for preorders, even though the UK site takes PayPal and Apple Pay on ordinary orders.
  • If the second check fails you get an email with a way to fix the payment method. Fix it before shipping starts. Once fixed, the order cannot be cancelled.

What does Pokemon Center check, and when?

Nothing is charged when you place a preorder. What happens instead is an authorisation, which is your card issuer confirming the card is real and the money is there. Pokemon Center runs one when you order and another when the box is about to leave. Only the second one can cost you the order.

Both timings are official. The UK Shipping Policy says Pokemon Center will "usually do this approximately seven days before shipment". The Preorder FAQ, which serves every region, says "a reauthorization will appear 3-5 business days prior to shipping". Treat the earlier one as your deadline for having everything in order. The FAQ adds that an authorisation can sit on your account for up to 30 days depending on the bank, which is why a hold from a preorder can still be visible weeks later.

Why does the second check fail?

The FAQ says cancellations happen "whenever there is an issue with the billing or shipping information". What actually causes that is the gap between ordering and shipping. A Pokemon Center exclusive Elite Trainer Box goes up for preorder weeks before the set is out, and those preorders usually close on the day they open, so a card that passed in September has to pass again in November. Four things change in between.

  • Your card has expired or been replaced. The UK policy says orders "may be cancelled if the card on file is not valid at the time of shipment". A card reissued after fraud, or one that ran out in the meantime, is not valid on the day it matters.
  • Money is not there on the day. Pokemon Center's FAQ asks you to "make sure you have sufficient funds available" once preorders begin processing, and a separate article on failed orders adds that the funds need to cover "taxes or currency conversion fees, where applicable".
  • Your billing address no longer matches the card. That same article says the most common reason for a payment failure is the billing system being unable to verify the card details, and that "the billing address must match what the card issuer has on file". Moving house between preorder and release is enough.
  • Your payment method was never allowed for preorders. Pokemon Center's FAQ is blunt: "Gift cards, Apple Pay and PayPal cannot be used for preorders." The UK FAQ lists PayPal and Apple Pay among the accepted methods for the UK site, so an ordinary order goes through with them and a preorder does not. Use a credit or debit card for anything marked preorder.

Can a cancelled preorder be reinstated?

No. The FAQ says a preorder cancelled at the payment stage "cannot be reinstated", and a preorder you cancel yourself carries the same warning: "we cannot guarantee the same item will be available for preorder again." Support cannot put the order back. Your routes to the product are a second preorder listing, a restock, or general release at other shops, and why Pokemon cards are sold out everywhere covers what the company has said about reprints.

You will not be charged for a cancelled preorder. Any hold you can still see is the authorisation waiting for your bank to release it, which the FAQ says can take up to 30 days.

For an exclusive there is sometimes a second chance. In March 2025 the first batch of Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Boxes sold out at Pokemon Center within an hour or two, and the company said more would be available later in the year, as PokeBeach reported. Our estimate of when the next exclusive opens is built from the dates that have already happened. When it does open, the site usually puts a queue in front of the product page, and the queue status page shows whether that queue is up right now.

What to do before the ship date so it does not happen

  1. Find the estimated ship month

Pokemon Center publishes an Estimated Preorder Release Dates table with a region column. In September 2026 it listed the 30th Celebration Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box for mid-September and the Special Delivery Box for the UK in late September. The second card check lands about a week before that.

  2. Check the card will still be valid in that month

Look at the expiry date, and if the card has been replaced since you ordered, the one on file is dead. The FAQ only describes changing the payment method after a charge has failed, by following the email it sends, so do not count on swapping the card in advance.

  3. Have the full amount available from a week before, not the day of

The UK policy authorises the full amount about seven days before shipment. On a shared account, or one that gets paid on a fixed day, that week is when the balance needs to be there.

  4. Keep the billing address matching the issuer

If you move, update the address with your bank first, then contact Pokemon Center. The FAQ says Pokemon Center is "unable to provide address changes for any preorders", so a changed delivery address means cancelling and re-ordering, if the item is still available.

  5. Watch for the payment email and act on it before shipping

If the second check fails, the FAQ says you will receive an email with instructions to change the payment method. Do it straight away: if changes are not completed by the time preorders begin shipping, the order is cancelled. And once the new method goes through, the order cannot be cancelled, so only fix it if you still want the item.

Does the UK site work differently?

Mostly the same rules, with two differences worth knowing. One is the timing of the second check, covered above. The other is how you cancel: the UK Shipping Policy tells you to use the Contact Us page to cancel before shipment, while the FAQ describes a Cancel Preorder button on the Order Details page, plus a UK Order Status page where a guest can cancel with the order id and postcode. Either works, and the FAQ says to allow up to 24 hours for the status to update.

In September 2026 Pokemon Center's Known Issues page also carries a UK-only note: "We are currently experiencing delays in processing and shipping orders." The second card check is tied to shipping, so a delay in shipping moves the check with it. If a UK preorder is running late, the window in which your card has to pass is later than the estimated date suggests, and longer.

None of this is unique to Pokemon Center. Any shop that takes payment at dispatch rather than at order has the same gap, and restock alerts in the UK covers what to do when the thing you missed comes back.

Why was my Pokemon Center preorder cancelled?

Because the card on file failed the authorisation Pokemon Center runs shortly before shipping. Their Preorder FAQ says a preorder is cancelled when the system cannot authorise the payment method as orders are processed for shipping, and that it cannot be reinstated. Expired or replaced cards, insufficient funds on the day, and a billing address that no longer matches the card are the usual causes.

Was I charged for the cancelled preorder?

No. Pokemon Center only charges when the item ships. A pending hold you can still see is the authorisation waiting for your bank to release it, which can take up to 30 days.

Can Pokemon Center reinstate a cancelled preorder?

No. The FAQ says a preorder cancelled at the payment stage cannot be reinstated, and the same item may not be offered for preorder again. Watch for a restock or buy at general release.

Can I use PayPal or Apple Pay for a Pokemon Center preorder?

No. Gift cards, Apple Pay and PayPal cannot be used for preorders, even though the UK site accepts PayPal and Apple Pay on normal orders. Use a credit or debit card.

When is my card actually charged for a preorder?

When the order ships. Before that there is a hold on the day you order, which drops off after 5 to 7 business days, and a second authorisation about seven days before shipment on the UK site (3 to 5 business days in the shared FAQ).

Can I change the delivery address on a preorder?

No. Pokemon Center does not change addresses on preorders. If the item is still available you can cancel and reorder with the new address.
